Cambodia was one of the first countries to recognize the GDR as an independent state. Between 1975 and 1979, international relations between the two countries were largely interrupted when Pol Pot was in power and wiped out about a quarter of Cambodia‘s total population. After Cambodia‘s liberation by Vietnamese troops, cooperation between the two states resumed, but what happened during the three years and nine months under Pol Pot was never really addressed. In my thesis Socialist Brothers, I used newspaper articles (including those from Neues Deutschland) to research how the GDR reported on political developments in the country after Pol Pot came to power. I also evaluated films by the film team Heynowski&Scheumann to see what they show in their narration of the Khmer Rouge‘s rule. Socialist Brothers at the Kunsttempel Kassel is an interim result of my research work and an attempt to translate all the knowledge I have acquired into an artistic and comprehensible form.
